Can Not Find the Right Wallpaper? Make Your Own

Searching for the perfect background for your home, but just can’t appear to locate it? Consider making your own. Due to digital printing technologies, it’s now simple and affordable to generate custom wallpaper from an original artwork, photograph or computer-generated picture.

“As long as you’re able to create an electronic picture from it, we can publish it,” says Allie Tate, marketing expert in Spoonflower, a custom made wallpaper manufacturer.

Companies like Spoonflower, Design Your Wall and TotallyCustomWallpaper.com let consumers to create wall coverings in an infinite array of patterns and colours. All these businesses can even match the colours in popular paint lines (although they can’t assure 100 percent accuracy).

Custom background is especially handy for those that are restoring old homes and wish to match a vintage wallpaper scrap. It’s also useful for homeowners who need to cover just a small area and do not wish to cover a full roll of background. (Check with the company you’re working together to see whether there’s a minimum order.)

Selecting your picture. All businesses restrict the reproduction of copyrighted materials, so the original must be either your own production, a picture to which you have the rights or from the public domain. (So forget about plastering your partitions with the logo of your favorite sports team.)

Since we’re speaking about background and not murals, your picture will be repeated throughout the surface of the paper. Consider the resolution of your electronic file when planning the repeat; although pictures can be enlarged up to the width of the paper, they might become pixilated in case your document resolution isn’t high enough.

Wallpaper widths change; Design Your Wall, for example, creates papers which are 54 inches wide, leading to a lot fewer seams than conventional wall coverings.

Installation. Some papers are hung with background adhesive. Spoonflower’s papers are self-adhesive — you simply dip them in water and then stick them onto the wall. If you’re tired of the paper or plan to move, it is going to peel right off — which makes it a great selection for renters. (The only downside is that the paper can’t be applied to a wall.)

Prices change. Spoonflower costs $60 for a two- by 12-foot roll. Design Your Wall charges $6 per square foot, but its paper is 54 inches wide (such as selvage — the sterile part you trim away on the edges).

It’s a fantastic idea to order a sample prior to proceeding with your full order. Thankfully, the charge is nominal — normally about $6.

Sharing your own design. Some customers use these services to produce their own wallpaper lines, which they sell at a shop or online at sites like Etsy. If you create a background on Spoonflower’s website, you can also post your design on the site, and you’ll receive a commission if someone else orders it.

Tate says the strangest order she has received was for a background depicting the human mind. Pausing a moment, she adds, “At this point around here, that’s not that odd.”
