Are Cascading Geraniums Annuals or Perennials?

Cascading or ivy geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum) belong to the Pelargonium family, which comprises over 200 species. These tender perennials are native to tropical regions. In temperate zones, they are generally grown as annuals and discarded at the end of the gardening season, but can be overwintered inside and replanted in the spring after all danger of frost has passed.

Frost-Free Areas

Since ivy geraniums are tender perennials they cannot tolerate frost or freezing temperatures. In temperate regions, grow them as annuals. You can grow them as perennials in frost-free areas, typically U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9 and over.

Temperate Zones

Cascading or ivy geraniums have been cold-sensitive and must be planted outside after all danger of frost has passed. It’s possible to grow ivy geraniums as annuals in hanging baskets, window boxes or containers in which the vines a free to cascade over the sides. The green leaf is covered in clusters of blossoms that range in shade from pastel pinks to brilliant reds and creates a striking display of color. You can also plant them in yearly flowerbeds or grow them so they cascade over rock walls.

Overwintering

Even though you may discard ivy geraniums in the end of the summer and purchase new ones in spring, then you can even overwinter the plants in it. Geraniums can be grown in containers or pots throughout the winter on a sunny window windowsill or kept in a cool, dark area until spring. Water the plants sometimes during the winter to keep the roots alive and restart regular plant care during early spring.

Factors

Geraniums overwintered inside grow to a bigger size each year, but do need some attention during the winter. Revitalizing them in late winter or early spring may rejuvenate them in time for late spring blossoms. But if you purchase them in the garden center, they’re prepared for planting and often in full bloom when the weather warms. These moderately priced blooms are readily available in a selection of colors. In case your ivy geranium is a difficult-to-find shade, overwintering it may be a fantastic choice to ensure you have the colors you desire.
