Home Tech: Movie Night on the Patio

Summer is waning, but that’s no reason to move indoors. With the right setup, we could enjoy some of autumn’s most anticipated pleasures — soccer — right in our backyards.

Fall is my favourite season, and for many like me in the Midwest, it’s time to take advantage of every precious minute outside before the real bone-chilling cold and snow set in. Bundling up and watching a game out can be fantastic fun and maintain the cabin fever at bay for a bit longer.

You don’t even require a dedicated outdoor house theater. Projection displays, inflatable indoor and screens TVs can all be used outside for short periods. So don’t let the change of seasons or a chill in the air put a damper on things. Even that early dusk has a bright side: TVs are hard to see in bright sunlight.

Dedicated outdoor house theaters are an investment. Make sure you use the right gear, for example all-weather TVs from specialized suppliers like SunBrite or SkyVue. You will sacrifice a number of the newest features such as 3D or online connectivity for safety and endurance, but that’s the price that we pay for not putting fire into the yard.

While it’s not recommended to use an indoor monitor outdoors, in rare cases and climates some people can take the risk. Make sure you enclose the unit in a weatherproof cabinet and use wiring rated to the components.

Of course the ideal solution would be to have a customized installer do the wiring and program the equipment. And if working with electrical jobs the ideal solution is often the safest.

Modern flat-panel TVs are lightweight and easy to move around. This gazebo is open to the components, making even an all-weather unit catchy here. Bringing an indoor-TV out for special events is an easy fix, if there is an electrical socket. Including a DVD player makes movie viewing potential without a cable hookup, and there are more options for streaming content which I will discuss later this week.

If you prefer to think of the outside as a Zen-like escape, then you needn’t sacrifice the amusement centre. This setting looks pristine and calm.

If you are fortunate enough to have a patio just off a media space, then the simple addition of outdoor speakers will expand the experience. Wall-mounted speakers are an easy and affordable accession. Just be sure to use speaker wire optimized for in-wall and outside use and seal all wire connections and conduits with silicon in a house improvement store. Additionally, it is a fantastic idea to check them regularly and clear away any bird nests or leaves.

Rooms like this seem created for outside screening, and they’re. Screens outdoors have one big limitation: sunlight. Make sure that yours is located under eves or in the colour for daytime viewing.

Day or night, LED LCD displays offer the sharpest, cleanest picture now, so we are able to take advantage of our time left outside.
